Caring for shoes

Good shoes deserve good care. Whether it’s your favorite leather dress shoes, suede sneakers, or sturdy winter boots, the right care can keep them looking sharp and lasting longer. Here are some simple, tried-and-true tips — and of course, if you’d rather leave it to the pros, you can always bring your shoes to us at Mano Skoservice for a professional cleaning and restoration.

Leather Shoes & Dress Shoes

Condition the leather. About once a month, apply a quality leather conditioner in a thin layer with a polishing cloth. Let it sit for a bit, then wipe off the excess. This keeps the leather nourished and prevents it from drying out.

Polish for shine. Use a cream polish that matches the color of your shoes. Apply with a cloth or brush, let it soak in, then buff to a shine. For extra gloss, finish with a thin layer of wax polish and polish it out with a soft cloth.

Tip: Rotate your shoes. Don’t wear the same pair every day. Leather needs a full day to dry and recover after use — otherwise, it wears out faster and cracks. Wooden shoe trees help absorb moisture and keep the shape intact.

Suede Shoes

Brush regularly. After each wear (or at least once a week), run a suede brush over the surface to remove dirt and restore the nap.

Protect from stains. Spray your suede with a protective spray to guard against water and dirt. Once a month is usually enough, but do it more often in bad weather.

Revive the look. If your suede looks tired, you can clean it with a suede shampoo and then refresh it with a pigmented spray.

Tip: Never wear suede shoes two days in a row when it’s wet outside. Let them rest and dry properly.

Sneakers (Leather & Suede)

Leather sneakers: Wipe off dirt with a damp cloth and condition the leather just like you would with dress shoes. Use shoe cream in the right color to keep them fresh and polished.

Suede sneakers: Brush after wear, protect with spray, and clean with suede shampoo if they get really dirty. Same golden rule — let them rest between wears.

Boots

Protect the leather. Apply a thin layer of leather grease to nourish and waterproof them. Let it soak in for about half an hour, then brush off the excess. A few times a year is enough.

Polish for style. Use a cream polish in the closest color to your boots. Apply, let it sit, then brush to a shine.

Tip: Boot trees (or wide shoe trees) help keep their shape and absorb moisture.

Patent Leather Shoes

Patent leather is all about the shine. Unlike regular leather, it’s sealed and can’t absorb conditioner.

Wipe and polish. Simply clean with a damp cloth and use a patent leather cleaner or spray to restore that glossy finish.

A Few Golden Rules for All Shoes

  • Always rotate your shoes — they last much longer if you don’t wear the same pair every day.

  • Use wooden shoe trees to absorb moisture and maintain shape.

  • Wipe or brush off dirt as soon as you get home, before it sets in.

  • If your shoes are wet, let them air dry naturally (never near a heater).
